As you guys will recall, we spent the last couple of episodes talking about the heavy casualties,

suffered by the armies during the Overland campaign in the spring of 1864 in Virginia. And we also discuss the physical misery

and psychological strain the soldiers endured. We wrapped up the last show by asking just what was being purchased by all this death,

injury, and suffering. And we said that as the month of May war on, soldiers and civilians alike

grappled with that question. Their opinions mattered because they had direct implications for morale

and motivation.
