Summary

You've been writing about her for years.

You know the way she carries herself. You know the outfits she'd wear, the dinners she'd attend, the way she says her opinion at the table without softening it first. You have written about her so many times you could find her blindfolded.

And she is still standing on the wrong side of the page.

Today I'm questioning something I love – and that I know you love, too. Journaling is beautiful. It's sacred. But somewhere along the way, writing about the woman you want to become started to feel like the same thing as becoming her.

It's not.

In this episode, we talk about the gap between the woman on the page and the woman in the mirror – why getting dressed might be the most underused tool in your transformation, and the science that proves what you wear is literally giving your brain instructions about who you are right now.

The page is where she was hypothetical. The dress is where she becomes real.

You don't have to think your way into her. You can dress your way into her.

Here's what we cover:

  • Why journaling, as beautiful as it is, can quietly become the thing keeping you stuck
  • The Self-Image Cycle and its most underused entry point
  • The Northwestern University study on enclothed cognition and what it means for your daily routine
  • The little black dress that changed everything, and why it had nothing to do with the dress
  • The difference between living from your desires versus living from your mood
  • A micro-action to take this week that will bring her forward, no journaling required

Within the school of self-image, I teach something called the self-image cycle, and it goes like this.

0:05.2

You have a thought about yourself, because that's what self-image is, how you think about yourself.

0:10.4

And that thought creates a feeling, a vibration in your body.

0:15.0

And that feeling either drives a certain behavior or it doesn't.

0:19.3

And that behavior confirms back to yourself who you believe yourself to be.

0:25.4

So let me give you an example.

0:27.4

Let's say that you wake up tomorrow morning and your first thought of the day is I'm behind.

0:33.3

And the day hasn't even started yet.

0:35.7

That thought produces a feeling. So for this example,

0:39.4

let's just say the feeling is overwhelmed. So I want you to think about it. When you're overwhelmed,

0:44.8

how do you show up? How productive are you? How do you take your time or how do you make time

0:51.9

for the things that are actually important to you? If you're like me,

0:55.5

you may find yourself procrastinating or working on things that really don't move the needle that

1:00.7

much, also known as busy work. Or maybe you add more to your plate more than you can even

1:07.1

handle. But here's what's happening at the subconscious level. What you're really doing

1:12.6

is gathering all of this evidence for your original belief. I'm behind because that's how the mind

1:19.3

works. Our thoughts and beliefs are commands. So you confirm to yourself, see, I told you, I'm behind. You are a woman who doesn't have time for what she says is important. And around and around the cycle goes. Most personal development teaches you to enter this cycle at the thought. Change your thinking, change your life. And listen, there is truth to that. Your thoughts matter.

1:46.3

They are at the core of everything. They are literally shaping and designing your entire life.

1:52.2

But I've come to learn that the cycle has many more entry points. You can enter through your thoughts.

1:59.1

You can enter through cultivating a feeling on purpose.

2:02.1

Have you ever listened to a certain song and all of a sudden you're feeling a certain way,

2:05.9

you get to create feelings that way as well. Or we can use one of the most underused tools,
