Summary

We talk about the sickening police treatment of mourners at Sarah Everard's vigil, and about the groundswell of women sharing their experiences, and the "safety work" they have to do when leaving the house; about the role of the state; about gatekeeping in the women's sector; building capacity to respond to sexual violence outside of the state; the role of cisgendered men - and much else.

Joining me is journalist Ash Sarkar; Bryony Beynon, who has worked extensively in helping organisations and communities to confront and prevent gender-based harms; and writer and activist Nim Ralph.

Hey everyone, this is Owen Jones. Welcome to the show. This has been a very, very grim week

0:17.0

in a time which has already been defined by so many horrors. And this is such an important

0:26.0

show. And I'm, you know, doing this show is such a non-nope because because I can, we can pass the mic,

0:32.0

give a platform to the people we need to hear right now in moments like this. Now, I don't think

0:38.0

this needs much of an introduction. So many people have been deeply affected by what happened

0:46.0

over the last few days. The alleged murder of Sarah Everard allegedly by a police officer

0:52.0

has caused huge amounts of anger and distress, particularly amongst women, amongst whom there

0:58.0

has been an outpouring of sharing experiences of being harassed by men on the streets and,

1:06.0

of course, of rampant male violence. And beyond that, just the everyday stress of leaving your

1:15.0

home as a woman and having to constantly navigate potential dangers posed by men.

1:21.0

Now, this is a conversation we need to have, but this conversation, which was already a conversation

1:29.0

that was more urgent than ever, took a different dimension yesterday, went at the visual for Sarah Everard,

1:36.0

mourners, women, mourning, what happened to her, were attacked by the police.

2:06.0

I mean, many people have spoken online on WhatsApp's about how the perverse situation,

2:22.0

where they were texting women at that visual asking them if they got home safe, ludicrous,

2:28.0

grotesque, and this is a conversation, a wide-ranging conversation we're going to have today.

2:34.0

Now, before I bring in the speakers, because this is a show which is about platforming the voices that we need to hear,

2:40.0

and that is me in this particular context, just a bit of basic housekeeping.

2:44.0

If you're watching live, hello, please do click through to YouTube if you're not watching on YouTube,
