Summary

In this episode, we look at the mental health benefits of having a routine.

1. Take Control of Your Sleep Cycle

"Routine can liberate your mental health, and it can have incredible psychological benefits, including alleviating symptoms of mental disorders, and insomnia. Creating a daytime routine for yourself or a loved one can promote better sleeping cycles." (Dr. Danielle Forshee)

2. Know What to Expect

"The importance of mental health has been associated with a variety of mental health conditions, including bipolar disorderaddictiondepression, among others. The reason behind this is that when we organize ourselves and know what to expect, it’s easier to actively work towards counteracting the thoughts and symptoms of any of the aforementioned mental health conditions." (Psychology Today)

3. Take More Time Off

"Creating a routine allows us to build in time for the important things. This includes time to rest, relax, and have fun. It’s not perfect – there are always going to be days when something overruns, a job takes three times as long as we expect it to take, or someone pops in unexpectedly. But structuring our time to include some downtime increases the likelihood that we’ll manage to have that time most days." (Blurt It Out)

This is one of those topics that I just sort of found interesting

0:39.0

because it's, we all sort of hear about routines and how valuable they are and I've definitely talked about them a lot on this show

0:46.8

But I think it goes deeper than that. I think there's actual like science behind why we should include routine in our lives. I think there's actual

0:58.1

ancestral precedent, let's use that that term, behind why we sort of always fall in into routines and why humans tend to

1:06.7

crave routine and so I want to dive a little bit into those over the next few weeks

1:12.2

in episodes and in today's we're looking at the

1:15.6

mental health benefits specifically because I know that is a topic that you are

1:20.7

interested in hearing more about.

1:23.3

So one of the big things with this topic

1:28.4

is that routine really allows you to take control of your sleep. Right? So we talk on this show all the

1:36.7

time about how valuable sleep is, but sleep is much more valuable than just for your

1:41.3

like physical health, right? It's valuable for your mental health right it's valuable for your mental health

1:43.6

it's valuable for your energy for your ability to move forward and think clearly and

1:49.7

feel like things are worth it all right now I know personally and I don't know if you've experienced this but I am a night out and that typically means

1:58.0

staying up really late and sort of being wired at the end of the day and I struggle to fall asleep a lot.

2:04.9

And so that's turned into over the years of doing this show, of doing freelance work, of doing

2:09.5

all the things that I've done in the past, that's turned into quite a few nights or quite a few days where I stayed up way
