Summary

Bipolar disorder can be very difficult to diagnose. But that pales in comparison to what it can be like to live with and manage. This week, Dr. Margaret Rutherford is republishing her interview with Terri Cheney who writes about her own battle with bipolar disorder. Sometimes she's won that battle. But not every time. And she talks about mixed episodes, which are harder to understand and certainly harder to live through. This is self-work, and I'm Dr. Margaret Rutherford.

At self-work, we discuss psychological and emotional issues and what you can do about them,

0:15.6

whether that's learning self-acceptance, taking action, or seeking therapy or treatment.

0:22.9

Eight years ago, I extended the walls of my practice to reach those of you who might already be knowledgeable about middle

0:27.1

health treatment, but also to those of you who might say, you'd never darken the door of a therapist.

And yet, you are here. I'll answer your questions while I invite you to take a few minutes for your

own self-work. It took me years to learn that they even existed and I just recently read a

0:48.8

study that said 40% of bipolar people will go through a mixed episode at some point. So it really needs to be

0:55.6

talked about more. And I think the drug companies are learning about it more as well. So I'm

1:01.5

hoping there will be more education. Welcome to this week's edition of self-work. In this month of March

in 26, I'm actually needing to pull some of my favorite

1:15.4

interviews for you to listen to. The first one is Terry Cheney, who talked with me in 2020

1:21.9

about her newest book, which was called Modern Madness, and I frankly couldn't put it down.

1:29.1

Even though I've been a clinician for over 30 years, I learned so much about bipolar disorder from her vivid explanations

1:35.1

and revelations about just what goes on inside someone's mind when they rapidly cycle between

1:41.1

thoughts of suicide and high-flying mania. She also discusses mixed states,

1:47.2

which a lot of people don't. We think of the high and the low, but actually you can experience

1:52.2

both more hypomania as well as depression, almost rapidly cycling. These mixed states are

2:00.3

hard for others to understand, but they're really

2:03.6

difficult to feel if you are the person with bipolar disorder. So I hope you'll listen to this if you

2:10.0

know someone with bipolar disorder or you love someone or you have bipolar disorder and share,

2:15.9

because this kind of information is what needs to be out there.
