Summary
Desmond Sean Ellington spent five years on tour with Hamilton as a Standby and recently made his Broadway debut in Hell's Kitchen, after starting with the show down at The Public.
Desmond's story is so interesting because it's a case study in what can happen when you make the hard decision to leave something behind that you know deep down isn't meant for you - even if it's terrifying! In Desmond's case, he left college without a plan and even though he had no interest in theatre at the time, he always knew he "was going to be a star." Once he walked away from what didn't serve him, the whole world opened up. And to be fair, Desmond has an uncanny ability to speak what he wants into existence, like when he gave himself two years to be cast in Hamilton and found himself on tour with the show two months later.
From performing in Atlanta (shout out to The Alliance Theatre) to seeing the world as a background vocalist for renowned gospel/R&B recording artists, to being bit with the Broadway bug when he saw his first Broadway show at 33 years old, Desmond brings his life experiences to every creative thing he does.

| 0:28.3 | I am good. So I know you gave me kudos to my setup here. I have to admit that this is my first time using my setup. So I've had like some some equipment because I do some like audio, I mean, um, voice work or whatnot. But I've never had like a full like on situation like specifically. So I literally started this process Saturday of last week. And I completed everything pretty much last night this morning. So this is my first run through with like everything set up, audio, visual, all of that. So I'm pretty proud of myself for- |
| 1:08.9 | I got to tell you, it looks great. You appeared on my |
| 1:12.8 | screen and I see the headphones and the mic and the windscreen and then the egg cartons back there. |
| 1:17.4 | Yes, I've been working. I feel like my motto is it's kind of like, and I'm probably going to |
| 1:24.4 | age myself, but there was a movie back in the day called Field of Dreams. And the famous quote from that movie is, if you build it, they will come. And I've always wanted to get more into voice acting, voiceover, stuff like that. And I've gotten few here and there. And it's like the more equipment that I would get, the more opportunities I would get. Like, okay, let me get another mic. Then I would get another. Let me get an interface. You know. And so I'm like, what would happen if I just turn my whole other closet into a whole vocal move? What will happen then? So we shall see. Yeah. If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready, you know? Period. This is so great already. Desmond, before we do anything else, though, can you just let the |

| 2:08.7 | for quite some time. You were standby with Hamilton on tour for several years starting in |
| 2:13.1 | 2017, I want to say. Yes. That was my first show, really. Yeah, which is crazy how, you know, the biggest show, especially at that time, would be my first show. My first audition here in New York. I had never auditioned for a show before. I knew of Hamilton just because, you know, |
| 2:39.0 | it was just big, it was all over. But I'm not from theater. I didn't. That wasn't my background. |
| 2:43.0 | I went to school for engineering. I saw my first Broadway show at 33 and kind of decided that night. I said, I think this is what I'm going to do. I don't know how, but I think this is what I'm going to do with my life. And almost 10 years later from that night, I've already completed my Broadway debut, my first Broadway show. Well, I was going to say, congratulations, Hell's Kitchen. I know I gave you a lot in the opening there. Oh, but don't worry. It's the journey. |
| 3:07.6 | We're going to break it out. |
| 3:08.5 | Totally, totally totally. |
| 3:10.1 | I kind of like starting at the end sometimes and then going backwards. That's right. I got to go back. But yes, congratulations. Thank you. You recently made your Broadway debut in Hell's Kitchen. You started with the show all the way down to the public. So like another long beautiful journey. |
| 3:06.1 | I know. |
| 3:07.1 | I know. |
| 3:07.6 | I'm so blessed to have, yeah, |
| 3:27.0 | have these, these long journeys with these shows. And I look at it as because again, I'm literally |
