Summary

The Future of the Quantified Self Movement
with Dr. Michael Snyder
----------------
What if a $50 smart watch could give you early warning signs for illness, infection, and even disease? Prevention costs less and is more effective than just about any cure, but most of us don't even manage to get an annual checkup at the doctor. This needs to change. On this week's podcast, you'll meet a leading researcher in the quantified self movement actively working to democratize data and personal health.

Listen & learn:

  • Genomics, proteomics, and omnics
  • What you can learn from elevated heart rate
  • The future of wearables
  • Big data for health - will it happen?

One of the most amazing things about the internet is it's allowed these disparate groups,

0:06.8

these super niche groups of people to come together and form larger groups in some cases,

0:12.1

quite large groups, and the quantified self-group started out like this. These were

0:16.8

data nerds, health nerds who started measuring their heart rate and their blood pressure,

0:21.4

getting dexascans and looking at body composition, tracking their sleep, and crunching their

0:27.1

data together to try to put together some models for health and illness, longevity, all of the

0:32.8

above. Fast forward till today, quantified self has gone mainstream, whether you know it or not,

0:38.1

whether you like it or not, that phone in your pocket is a health tracker. You may have your

0:44.2

health app turned off, but I bet it's on. Open up your phone and go to your health app and

0:48.2

see what's in there. You might be surprised to find that your phone is already tracking your

0:52.3

steps, your phone might be tracking your sleep, and in future, maybe your phone can even do things

0:58.4

like scan for temperature changes, detect heart rate changes without you even needing to do anything.

Why would this be advantageous? Well, we're just coming out of a pandemic where things like a fever,

1:11.3

things like an elevated resting heart rate are very, very clear signals for potential infection,

1:18.5

and I think everyone would agree that we could have, as an international community,

1:23.3

responded better to testing, tracking, quarantine, and prevention of the spread of COVID-19,

1:29.4

and that's just one of many, many things that we need to be worried about, tuberculosis,

1:35.9

type 2 diabetes, even things like Lyme's disease, a little simple smartwatch can give us so much data.

1:44.0

I have, my interest in this has waxed and waned over the years. I'm suddenly very much

1:49.1

interested again. I had an experience in the past year with a CGM, a continuous

1:54.0

blood glucose monitor that really got me excited about wearable technology again. On this week's

1:59.7

podcast, we'll dive deep into the future of wearable tech. If you're new here, it's the Lucas
