0:00.0	In this lesson unit we'll look at the structure of the Holy Sacrifice, the Mass in the
0:17.2	traditional Roman Rite. Now the first thing to know is that the mass has two halves. They're actually
0:24.2	called the mass of the catac humans and the mass of the faithful. The reason for
0:28.6	this is the first half was open to the catac humans, those who are not baptized.
0:34.4	This runs from the very beginning to the preparatory prayers at the foot of the altar,
0:38.4	all the way up through the epistle, through the gospel, and to the creed.
0:45.0	All of this is part of the mass of the catac humans.
0:48.8	After that, the deacons and the subdeacons would in the porters would lead all those who were not baptized
0:56.1	out of the church, out of the home in persecution times,
0:59.8	and then would continue the mass with the offatory and up through the Roman
1:05.6	canon and then the communion right and to the very end. So in a sense there are two
1:12.1	masses. There's the mass of the catachumans, which is mainly prayer and instruction,
1:18.0	to make sense, catacumans. And then there is the mass of the faithfulful which has the propitiatory sacrifice in it and that part was hidden.
1:27.5	And in a way it still is hidden because the Roman canon is recited in a whisper in a low voice. So those are the two halves of our
1:37.1	liturgy. The first half, scholars say, goes back to the synagogue service, the
1:42.2	way the apostles would have known how to
1:45.1	worship and that is opening prayers, readings from the law and the
1:49.7	prophets, instruction, and then a dismissal.
1:54.0	But in the new covenant with the Catholic Church, we also have the mystery of the
1:59.7	Eucharist and so that becomes the mass of the faithful so both of these things are happening
2:05.4	together. Now once you understand that there's two halves now you have to
