There is a very specific way for setting up a traditional altar in the Roman right and so today we're going to look at how a altar is set up properly in the Roman right and we'll also look at the

0:26.6

sacred vessels that are used during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and also other liturgies. Let's take a look.

0:35.0

All right, well, the very first thing you'll notice on a traditional altar is

0:41.0

usually they are positioned ad orientum that is they are

0:46.0

oriented towards God the East is where Christ will return Christ says in the

0:51.9

Gospels as lightning flashes from east to west, so

0:55.3

shall the return of the son of man be. So somehow when Christ returns he comes from

1:00.5

the east and this is why early Christians always prayed to the East. They were not praying to Jerusalem. They were praying to the direction of East because that's where Christ will return. In fact, when they were baptized, they would face to the East

1:14.7

and affirm their belief in the Father's Son and the Holy Ghost, and then they would turn to the

1:18.4

west, which signifies darkness and death, and they would renounce the devil and all of his poms. Now when you look at an

1:27.1

altar, oh and some altars are freestanding you go to Rome for example St. Peter's

1:32.3

St. John Lateron, St Mary Major.

1:35.0

All that being said usually for example St. Peter's is facing East but the church is

1:42.4

oriented west so the Pope when he celebrates

1:45.8

mass at the high altar in St. Peter's and traditionally there's candles and

1:50.5

crucifix and all kinds of things there.

1:52.7

So it's not like he's directly speaking to the people

1:56.5

in that way.

1:57.0

In fact, during the time of Gregory the Great

2:00.3

and thereafter, there was often a curtain or screen that was brought around the Pope

2:05.9

when he celebrated Mass to provide more mystery and more privacy as the Pope offered the Holy Sacrothal. more facing in the center on the altar, not just hovering over the altar, but on the actual altar

2:26.6

is the crucifix.
