Very often, at training events, I'll ask the students with a raise of hands, tell me

how many of you have ever had a chronic pain condition.

Let's call chronic six months or more, but pain I'm usually referring to lower back

or knees or shoulders, and usually about 70 or 80% of the hands will go up.

This is pretty typical of adult society, usually 70 or 80% of people, at some point have had

a chronic pain issue, might have kept you from being productive at work, might have kept

you up at night.

One of the worst effects is when it keeps you from being active and doing exercise

and staying fit, you can kind of downward spiral pretty quickly.

On this week's podcast, I'd like to propose the idea of rethinking pain, rethinking your

relationship with pain, rather than a pill for an ill or a pill for pain.

What about if pain is just your body's way of telling you, hey Lucas, you went a little

too hard on the hiking trail yesterday, or, hey Lucas, you shouldn't have lifted up

that heavy thing 30 times, maybe 10 times was enough.

What if pain is a self protective mechanism, it's your body trying to speak to you, and

when you cover it up with ice or ibuprofen or pain killers, again and again and again,

maybe, maybe you're missing out on some key messages.

I'm not saying there's not a time and a place for those things, there certainly are.

I'd also like to propose the idea that perhaps we should rethink our relationship with quote

unquote healers, whether that's an osteopathic chiropractor, yoga teacher, pilates teacher,

personal trainer, what if there are no healers, what if your body is the healer, what if

you are the driver, and what if it's your responsibility to work with third-party providers who
