Summary

As the Meghan Markle revelations underline, the British media is institutionally racist. From incessantly racist and bigoted news coverage, to the treatment of people of colour within the media industry, this is a conversation that needs to be had.

I'm joined by The Guardian's Joseph Harker, former BBC and CNN journalist Saima Mohsin and Miqdaad Versi from the Muslim Council of Britain.

Hello, good evening, or if you're not listening live, whatever time of the day it is. Welcome

0:16.8

to the show. Oh, there is, it is all kicking off. Before we turn up on air, Pierce Morgan

0:23.0

has now quit or been sacked from Good Morning Britain. We're not talking about Pierce Morgan

0:28.6

all the show. I can absolutely assure you of that, but it is relevant to what we're talking

0:32.0

about. If you're watching us live, hello, if you're listening to it on the podcast, also

0:36.7

hello, do you subscribe, hit five stars on the podcast so more and more people can listen.

We can have more and more people spreading the word and giving an alternative platform.

0:47.2

And I think this is an example of why we need these alternative platforms. Now what we're

0:53.5

talking about today is the institutional racism of the British media. Now you will notice there

0:59.6

is no question mark in the title. This show isn't starting on the basis of debating whether there

1:06.0

is institutional racism within the British media. In the same way, I'm not going to debate whether

1:11.8

the climate emergency is a fact because in just the same way, the institutional racism of the

1:17.4

British media is an objective fact. It's not a fact we can often discuss as a fact, largely because

1:25.4

the boundaries of political conversation are defined in this country by the media itself,

1:31.1

which is not exactly willing to discuss its own racism and bigotry in an honest fashion.

1:39.4

And that's why we have to have this discussion because there are actually few platforms

1:44.1

where that conversation can take place. And given the media we are told is a pillar of any healthy

1:50.6

democracy. The fact that we're not having this conversation, given the way we look at the world,

1:55.6

is often transmitted through the eyes and filtered through that media, this is a critical

2:02.5

discussion for the very basis of our democracy. Now a society which hasn't come to terms with its

2:07.4

racist history of colonialism and slavery has certainly not begun to come to terms with its racist

2:13.5

present, of course the two are very firmly linked. Now the reason we're having this conversation
