Summary

In this episode, Mark Groves sits down with the always-wise Kate Northrup for a heart-expanding, truth-bomb-filled convo that flips the script on how we think about money, success, and self-worth. Kate unpacks the surprisingly deep connection between your nervous system and your relationship with money—how the way you spend, save, or stress is often tied to how safe you feel in your body. They dive into the power of doing less, the myths of hustle culture, and how rest and regulation are the real keys to abundance. From motherhood and identity to healing old patterns and choosing aliveness over burnout, this one’s all about coming home to yourself—and rewriting the rules of what it means to live a rich life. As an entrepreneur, bestselling author, and mother, Kate Northrup supports ambitious people to light up the world without burning themselves out. Kate teaches how to heal your relationship with money, time, and work. She’s the author of the bestsellers Money: A Love Story and Do Less, the creator of the Do Less Planner, and the host of the top ranking podcast, Plenty. Her work has been featured by The NY Times, Oprah Daily, The Today Show, Glamour, Harvard Business Review, and more. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Mark Groves podcast.

I think we all understand that money has an emotion to it, right?

0:08.8

Like it triggers us emotionally, but it also triggers us on a nervous system level.

0:13.5

And I obviously, like you, have been really curious about our capacity to hold more, our capacity to hold abundance, our capacity to hold more

0:23.4

love, more joy, more possibility.

0:26.1

And we often limit what our capacity is based on the capacity of our nervous system.

0:31.3

So we know that there's the saying that money is the number one cause of divorce, and it's

0:36.5

not money that is. It's that there's different stories about money. And we need to be able to translate these things to someone saving, you know, they might never want to do because they weren't allowed to have anything. And maybe their parents were really strict with money. And to someone else, overspending causes a lot of fear because that's what a parent did when they were younger

and they were always stressed about money, right? And these two people could end up in relationship

0:58.7

and then really stressed about each person's way that they orient to money. But on a deeper level,

1:06.3

I'm really curious about our personal relationship to money ourselves. Because ultimately, even the

1:13.9

triggers that come from money in a romantic relationship will end up just revealing our own

1:20.1

challenges with money. So I wanted to have on someone who's an expert at looking at the layers

1:27.2

of the nervous system,

1:29.2

of triggers.

1:30.7

You know, there's this idea that I've also been playing with of what does it mean to really

1:35.6

step into abundance, to actually have an abundance mindset, to really be mindful of the way

1:40.8

my mind works, the narratives I have, the beliefs I have.

1:46.6

I remember Alan Watts saying that in the Great Depression, there was no less money. It was just the way people behaved around

1:52.4

money that changed. And, you know, I think that's something we all need to just take into account.

1:58.3

It's not minimizing people's challenges monetarily, but saying,

what can I do? And I know I grew up with a lot of beliefs about wealthy people. And then those
