Since this is the first episode of the show's 2024 season,

2024 really is going to be one of the most consequential years of our lifetimes.

I thought I'd kick things off on a topic that could be make or break over the next 12 months,

Russia's invasion of Ukraine. My guest today is Yaroslav T-12 Fromob, the Wall Street Journal's

chief foreign affairs correspondent, and author of Our enemies will vanish,

the Russian invasion, and Ukraine's war of independence.

Out today and available in our bookshop, linked in the show notes as per usual. Our enemies will

vanish is the best book I've read on the history of the war especially when

combined with Yaroslav's on the ground reporting as a native Ukrainian. I also spend a significant amount of time

of the episode asking about the pressing issues that would define the war this year.

Why the counter-offensive succeeded in 2022 but failed in 2023,

whether or not there was a chance to negotiate a settlement earlier in the war,

Zilensky's performance both in the Ukraine and Allied capitals,

and whether 2024 would be marked by victory, defeat, or stalemate for either side.
