Summary

Most founders quit in year one—not because their business can’t work, but because they burn out right before it starts to.

In this episode of Built by Business, Andy unpacks the “One Year Rule”—why everything feels so hard in months 1–9, and what actually starts to click after 12 months in the game. From building momentum to trusting your process, this episode is for anyone stuck in the messy middle wondering if it’s time to quit—or time to double down.

Most businesses fail in year one, not because they don't have potential, but because the founder

runs out of belief.

If you're thinking about quitting, this episode is your sign to hold the line.

Let me explain why it gets better after 12 months and what's really waiting for you on

the other side. When I launched my first online business, it took almost two years before I really made any money.

That was back when I started my Learn How YouTube channel.

posted well over 100 videos over the first year or two before I ever made my first dollar from

YouTube AdSense. And is a similar type of story with our e-commerce brand,

1:29.1

Remi & Rue. It was a good eight to 10 months before we ever made any sort of profit from our

sales, at least any type of profit where we could pay ourselves. We didn't take our first paycheck

until we had been selling for 18 months on Amazon. And that's

1:45.4

not including the nine months we spent building, creating the product, and getting ready for

launch. Year one feels so hard because you're learning and doing at the same time. Regardless

1:57.0

of what your online business is, you're expected to be a marketer, operator, designer, accountant, all with no experience.

2:05.3

It's really hard to know what's a real signal versus noise in your business.
