Summary

In this vital and eye-opening episode, we speak with Hannah Ashwell from QuitPorn Faith about the complex, often misunderstood topic of sex addiction within the Church—especially when it involves individuals who have offended or are at risk of offending. Hannah shares the most common misconceptions churches hold and how these can hinder true healing and safety. We explore how faith communities can create cultures of openness and accountability while implementing essential safeguarding protocols to protect everyone. Drawing from real-world experience, Hannah offers insight into how churches can balance grace with responsibility, and restoration with necessary boundaries. From practical next steps when someone discloses illegal behavior to examples of churches walking this difficult path well, this conversation provides both courage and clarity. For leaders who feel overwhelmed by the weight of these issues, Hannah offers hope: with the right tools and heart posture, churches can be places of redemption and protection.

and breaking free from compulsive sexual behavior. Today is episode 431, and here joining me for this series is my co-host, Mr. Rodney Wright. Rodney, it's good to see you again, friend. How are you doing? Thank you, Nick. It's good to be with you and I brought a special friend with me here today. Yes, for those who are checking us out on the YouTube channel, they'll know what we're saying, but for those who aren't, you know, we're not going to tell them. We're going to make them go check out on YouTube. There you got an extra special background as if, you know, someone's watching over you, making sure you stay on point. Yeah, yeah. Not to be offensive, but it's just the location I happen to find myself today. Yeah. Well, we always play that game of like, where in the world is Rodney Wright? Because it seemed, we know you travel a lot to speak at churches and parent groups and grateful for a little bit of time today to be a part of this series. Yeah, I'm excited about this podcast really going out. I think Hannah, that you're going to hear from Ashwell,

1:11.8

she's really, has a lot of courage, Nick, and she's really speaking to issues that are really

1:16.7

real and helping churches. Again, as you mentioned on the bad podcast, just walking with grace

1:22.3

and truth and a heart to help, you know, and to equip churches on how to do this better.

1:30.1

And she's doing great work in Scotland and reaching out across the bond, as we would say.

1:36.5

Yeah, Hannah Ashwell joined us live from Scotland, and we found out it was evening there,

1:41.2

so it was nice for to join us.

1:42.7

But today we're starting a new series

1:44.5

we're calling healthy churches and healthy pastors because I know you and I share a conviction,

1:49.7

Rodney, that the church can and should be the safest place in the world for people to come

1:54.9

for help. And right now that so often just isn't the case for a whole variety of reasons.

1:59.7

It might be a lack of education, a lack of training, fear, just not on the case for a whole variety of reasons. It might be a lack of education, a lack of

2:01.5

training, fear, just not on the radar for whatever reason. This can be a difficult area for pastors

2:07.6

and churches. And so we want to do a four-part series just talking about how churches can become

2:13.3

that safe place. And one of those is navigating the risks that come. When we open this door to

2:19.3

helping people who struggle with sexually compulsive behaviors or sexual addiction, we may also

2:24.7

be saying yes to those who have become a sexual offender, who've crossed certain legal lines.

2:29.1

And when it comes to that legal stuff, I mean, I know when I was a pastor, that was like,

2:32.6

whoa, that's a world. I don't

2:34.2

know what to do with. And so maybe in fear of those legal situations, we're hesitant to do
