Summary

"Americans who think they are Christians, truly are something else; intensely religious, but devout in the American Religion."
In this episode of Universal History, I sit down again with Deacon Seraphim Rohlin to explore the roots and characteristics of the true "American religion". We trace how movements in American history shaped the spiritual landscape that eventually gave rise to Mormonism, Adventism, spiritualism, and perhaps even your own journey back to traditional Christianity.

And so what is the American religion? He says that the American religion centers on the solitary

0:16.3

self's direct encounter with God. It's the believer's conviction of possessing an inner divine spark,

0:22.7

a sense of freedom that expresses itself in total spiritual solitude. So God is alone, and I am alone,

0:30.7

and I can have a relationship with God, and that relationship is in total solitude to anything else

0:36.2

that is happening in the world around me.

0:39.1

And this, to me, if I were going to put a finger on, okay, what's the number one defining

0:44.9

feature of American religion, is that there has to be this experiential conversion.

0:50.3

Every single one of these things we're going to talk about is not bad in and of itself.

0:55.0

Like obviously, lots of famous people within the Orthodox Church, beginning with St. Paul,

1:00.0

had radical encounters with Jesus Christ which totally transformed their lives, and they give up everything to follow him.

1:06.0

Obviously, there's nothing wrong with that.

1:08.0

It's just not normative for everyone, right? It's just not the experience that everybody has. Not everybody has a road to Damascus moment.

1:14.6

Well, in American Christianity, everybody is supposed to have. Welcome to the symbolic world.

1:35.3

Hello, everyone.

1:47.5

We are back with Deacon Seraphim Rowland.

1:51.5

We had our last episode talking about folk magic and fairies and America, and we ended

1:59.0

hinting at the great American experiment in religion.

2:05.6

And so I'm very curious to see where Deacon Serapin wants to take us today.

2:09.6

Please let us know where we're going.

Yeah, so it's been a little while since we've recorded that episode, and since then,
