0:32.0	Good to be here. So you weren't originally in
0:34.8	wine writing per se? Not at all. I really started my professional career in
0:40.0	publishing and when I did start to write I was writing anthologies and travel books before I got into wine.
0:47.0	What was your family upbringing like?
0:50.0	Various of middle class of Central European style bourgeoisie in London a lot of emphasis placed
0:56.2	on good education and fortunately I was quite good at that so I progressed through
1:00.5	the ranks of schooling and the university.
1:03.0	And your parents had fled continental Europe in the late 30s?
1:06.0	That's right, in the late 30s, yes.
1:08.0	You were the first generation to grow up in London.
1:10.0	Indeed.
1:11.0	Part of London where I lived and schools which I attended were full of people like me.
1:16.2	So it was only when I got to a place like Cambridge University the things were rather different
1:19.9	and I had to mix with people from totally different backgrounds.
1:23.0	You've actually written books that have addressed this about class and Britain and also the Jewish experience
