wine writing per se? Not at all. I really started my professional career in

publishing and when I did start to write I was writing anthologies and travel books before I got into wine.

Various of middle class of Central European style bourgeoisie in London a lot of emphasis placed

on good education and fortunately I was quite good at that so I progressed through

the ranks of schooling and the university.

And your parents had fled continental Europe in the late 30s?

That's right, in the late 30s, yes.

You were the first generation to grow up in London.

Part of London where I lived and schools which I attended were full of people like me.

So it was only when I got to a place like Cambridge University the things were rather different
