William was charging north.

If he was going to hold on to his new kingdom, he had to counter this threat in person.

This situation in York was much worse than it had been in the previous year.

Because now the unrest wasn't limited to just the people of York and Durham.

Instead they were joined by a huge army of dames who were fresh off from cruising England's

eastern shore, burning and looting whatever they could get their hands on.

And so William and his army had no time for a stealth mission.

This march was an all-out charge aimed directly at crushing the growing insurgency in the

north.

But here's the thing about popular insurgencies.

They're called popular because they have local support, which means that every person

in occupying four seas on the street, every meek passerby, every kindly old man, very

well could be on the side of the rebellion.
