Imagine two different investors. One builds a massive, fast-growing empire, and the other builds a smaller but steadily

0:05.7

growing portfolio. And then the economic storm hits. A crash, a recession, maybe even an economic

0:12.1

depression. The question is, which of these investors is left standing? In my experience, it's the smaller

0:18.5

but anti-fragile investor who survives and the larger but

0:22.5

fragile investor who doesn't. That's why in this episode I want to share why my personal

0:26.5

goals aren't to become the biggest investor with the most properties or the most money,

0:30.1

but is to have enough money to have an abundance of time and to have an anti-fragile

0:35.2

portfolio that gets stronger as things get more difficult. Welcome to another Friday edition of the podcast where I'm keeping things shorter and more informal. If you like this format, I would love your feedback. You can just leave me a comment below on YouTube or if you're listening on Spotify. This idea came from Nassim Tel-Eb in a book called Anti-Fragile, Things That Gain from Disorder. And the way I understood it from the book is that you have fragile. It's pretty easy to understand. If you had a wine glass and you dropped a wine glass, it's going to break. That's fragile. And you might think that the opposite of fragile is something this resilient. Like if you drop a rock, it's not going to break, at least the first time. But there's actually another extreme.

1:11.4

A true opposite of fragile is anti-fragile, meaning the rougher you treat it, the better it gets,

1:18.0

the stronger it gets. So if you have a resilient rock, you can drop it a couple times and five

1:22.7

times, or you hit it with a chisel. Eventually, that rock's going to break. Or another metaphor is

1:27.2

if you have three delivery boxes, you know, you get it from Amazon, the fragile box is going to have handle with care, it's got the wine glass inside. If you drop the box, it's going to crack the things that are inside. Maybe a resilient box has styrofoam around the wine glasses. And if you drop it once or twice, probably okay, but if you drop it from a 10-foot building, 10-story building, the thing's going to break. Well, an anti-fragile box, if you drop it once or twice, probably okay, but if you drop it from a 10-story building, the thing's going to break.

1:46.2

Well, an anti-fragile box, if you dropped it from a 10-story building, would get stronger because you treated it roughly.

1:53.7

Now, is this just a mythical idea? Like in Greek mythology, they had these things called the hydras, where the hero like chops off the head of the hydra and it grows back too.

2:01.8

That is anti-fragile.

2:03.2

It gets stronger the more you do to it.

2:05.6

But actually it happens in nature.

2:07.0

It happens in our bodies as well.

2:08.6

Think about your muscles.

2:09.7

If you push your muscles, if you overload them, that's the kind of definition of weightlifting

2:13.5

or running or doing anything that's going to strengthen your muscles.

2:16.7

You overload it and
