Summary

Endlessly quoted, residing on every list of the best films of all time, you might think that “Casablanca”—released 75 years ago—is overrated and played out. Nope! It’s a fun film with romance, snappy ironic dialogue, and a stunning cast. And it’s also a fascinating historical document, given that it was written before Pearl Harbor and produced in the early days of America’s involvement in World War II, when the end of the war was anything but a foregone conclusion. We discuss the magical letters of transit, Captain Renault’s jocular amorality, Victor Laszlo the speechifying drip, Ilsa’s piercing stare, Major Strasser’s favorite cereal, Sam’s implausible piano handwork, the Ken Cinema in San Diego, and how the war was like a rap battle.

I'm your host, Jason Snell, and it is time for another edition of Old Movie Club.

0:19.0

Oh, movie club.

0:21.9

Steve and his backup, David, aren't here for this one.

0:25.4

We are talking about, I basically just demanded it of Phil.

Normally, Philip Michaels chooses our old movie.

But you know what?

0:34.1

I thought he wouldn't object since I actually went and saw a revival of Casablanca in a theater in San Diego when we were in college with Phil.

0:43.3

And at one point during the movie, I turned to look at Phil and I could see his mouth moving as he recited along with every line of dialogue in the movie.

0:52.4

And I thought, whew, geez, this is the first time

0:54.9

I've ever seen it. So anyway, we are here to talk about Casablanca. 75 years ago, it was

1:01.7

released in theaters in the United States. So we're just getting to it in time. I put it on

1:06.1

the list back then, and now we have finally come up to talk about Casablanca with my wonderful panel, which of course

1:12.4

features Philip Michaels. Hello. Hello. We're not pairing this with any movie tonight.

1:18.2

It's just, it's all Casablanca all the time. It's almost as if, um, as if I misunderstood.

1:22.8

Yeah, let's talk about Casablanca and no other movie. It's not necessary. Not every old movie club needs to

1:28.3

have two movies. No, it really isn't. And if you're going to have a single movie episode,

1:33.0

this is the one to do it, man. Yeah, I think so. I agree. I agree. And do you remember going to

1:37.5

see Casablanca with me in college? I do remember going to see it with you. I actually saw it

1:43.6

twice in that theatrical run at the Ken Theater in San Diego.

1:48.9

And the other time that I went, I went with another fella.
