We Discuss:

  • Many Midwest states could improve hunting by changing season structures.
  • Crossbow placement within seasons can significantly affect hunting pressure.
  • CWD spending focuses on testing rather than researching a cure.
  • EHD and bluetongue have caused major deer herd declines in some regions.
  • Balanced age structures are critical for sustainable deer populations.
  • Farm Bureau and hunters often clash over deer population management.

This week's White Tail podcast presented by Moultry is day two of a Q&A session at the Iowa Deer Classic with Skip Sly and Lee Likoski.

It's like you live in the state that has the least amount of timber, the least amount of deer, and every state around you, why is everybody flocking to Iowa?

0:14.5

It's because of those regulations. So this guy with a straight face is trying to say, we want to change the whole policy of Iowa because I have a thousand acres and I will only allow 100 on my land. That is the logic these guys are using. It makes no sense. In this episode we're talking about the future of white tail hunting, regulations, herd health, and the battles happening behind the scenes to keep white tail hunting improving. I give a lot of respect to both of these guys, not afraid to address any elephants in the room. Hope you guys enjoy this episode. Here we go. Same today as it was 20 years ago. What are you doing to stop it? Well nothing. We're getting this 70 million a year or whatever to test and it's like it's not helping anything. You're doing the same thing. If 20 years ago, you can't tell me one more damn thing about it today than you could 20 years ago? To destroy the future for these kids, to destroy the few activities they have, the farm beer is wrong there. They're straight up just wrong. And they're not going to get away with it. And over my dead body, are they going to ruin our resource in the future? All right. Lee, you had a hunch shared from Indiana last year. Skip, you're speaking out as an applicant for game law changes in Ohio.

1:12.8

Aside from Iowa, what state is getting better for hunting and which is falling the fastest?

1:17.9

Falling the fastest?

1:18.8

Falling the fastest.

1:19.9

I would say Indiana is probably has boomeranged up to one of the number one spots in the country.

1:28.5

They're far from perfect.

1:30.0

You know, I mean, if you could magically, not magically, but strategically, make a couple

1:35.5

changes in Indiana, like moving that gun season back two days or two weeks, Indiana would be

1:41.3

number one.

1:42.2

And I see, you know, I'll say like, hey, if Indiana did this, they could be number one.

1:47.1

Well, I can say that about 10 other states.

1:50.7

Like if Missouri put a non-resident quota in place and they went to one buck and they moved their gun season,

1:58.3

their rifles out of the rub, which is madness, Missouri would be the

2:02.4

number one state in the country.

2:04.8

And Ohio has that same opportunity.

2:08.0

If they got rid of the corn piles and they put a non-resident quota in place, it'd be real nice

2:12.8

if they put their crossbows in their own season, just said like, hey, you know, we don't, we don't want muzzleloaders in archery season. Correct. Well, crossbows, let's put them in their own season. You know, you want to use a crossbow? Great, wonderful. Just like we do in Iowa. You put them in their own season. You want to use a crossbow in Iowa. I have no problem with it. you use it in late muzzleloader season. You've got two and a half or three weeks, and then I think you can use it early muzzleloaders well. And we allow for crossbows for people who are injured, disabled, or senior citizens. So we have a perfect system, so don't break it. So, you know, the crossbow lobbyist tried to come here and say, you know, you need crossbows in Iowa.

2:52.2

We have them and we have them in the rightful place.

2:55.0

But it'd be like one of the muzzleloader companies coming to Iowa or even the gun company saying, you know, we think ARs belong in archery season.

3:05.5

They don't, nor to crossbows.
