Summary

In this episode I reflect on the symbolism behind Superman as a figure rooted in American mythology and post-WWII identity. I also discuss the new Superman movie by James Gunn, which actually has an interesting twist that can help us understand not just the superhero archetype, but also the crucial and relevant question of the immigrant or convert.

Hello, everyone. I went to see the Superman movie. I've been kind of out of the superhero movie stuff for a while now because it was so horrible. And, you know, I heard that this one was different. And because I did like the James Gunn movies in Marvel, figured I'd go see the movie. And I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't a great movie. It's pretty

0:21.9

mid in general in terms of movies. But it definitely wasn't woke. I have to say, it wasn't

0:28.4

DIY. It wasn't, it didn't have all of the, all the annoying characteristics and the kind of

0:34.4

preachiness that you see in, that you've been seeing in movies now for the past

0:38.4

two decades. It was a Superman movie, a basic Superman movie. There was, of course, one

0:44.9

trope that was changed, and I'll mention that at the end of the video if you don't want to get

0:48.6

spoiled, but I wanted mostly at the outset to look at the symbolism of Superman and to kind of understand the symbolism

0:55.5

of Superman, especially in terms of, let's say, American narrative, you could call it, or you could

1:03.3

also call it something like, again, post-World War II consensus narrative. Of course, Superman comes

1:09.7

from before World War II. But there is

1:13.8

already that story of the relationship, let's say, between two different types of thinking of the

1:19.3

excess of the one and the excess of the many was already there before World War II. It's just that

1:25.4

because the allies are the ones who won during World War II,

1:28.3

that story, you know, you could say

1:30.1

the Superman story,

1:31.2

the American story became the trope

1:34.7

or became the pattern

1:35.8

for most storytelling, at least in the West.

1:39.8

And what is that story?

1:40.9

And what is that story?

1:52.3

Yeah. And what is that story? This is Jonathan Pejot.
