Hello and welcome to another episode of No Such Thing as a Fish, a weekly podcast

0:20.6

this week coming to you live from Oxford. My name is Dan Schreiber, I am sitting here with Anatishinsky

0:33.9

Andrew Hunter Murray and James Harkin and once again we have gathered around the microphones with

0:38.9

our four favorite facts from the last seven days and in no particular order here we go. Starting

0:45.6

with fact number one and that is my fact, my fact this week is that the longest professional

0:51.6

baseball match on record only lasted so long because the umpire's rule book was missing the bit

0:57.7

that explained when a match should be stopped. I kind of think that an umpire should already know

1:06.8

the rules by the time he's starting to umpire again. You would think you should halfway through,

1:11.3

he shouldn't be going on, I'm just going to chat. Well this was unprecedented times in the

1:16.4

baseball world so this was a match that was in April 18th 1981. It was the poor tucket red socks

1:23.2

and they were playing the Rochester Red Wings and so these are smaller teams and a different league

1:28.8

professional baseball players though and poor tuck it it was played there which is in Rhode Island

1:34.3

big deal for poor tuck it because the the newspaper the next day said not since the time that

1:39.9

they had to shoot the drunken camel at the city zoo has there been this much excitement in poor

1:46.5

tucket. Yeah but it was 1981, 1981 so it sounds like a weird match from ages ago quite recently

1:53.9

really at the start of the match there were 1700 fans watching by the time the game eventually ended

1:59.7

which was 407 in the morning there were 20 people left watch it still watching the match 20 which

2:06.2

I think it was quite a lot. I read that some of them were asleep. Oh okay well they all got

2:10.3

given a season ticket so it paid off for that. I think some of them got lifetime passes. Yeah they

2:14.4

did that's true so it was this is the longest baseball match on the world which is eight hours

2:18.7

and 25 minutes it really isn't that long I think what makes it long it's quite long it's

2:24.7

a combination of cricket that's exactly exactly because all the writing up like there was a player
