Hi everyone, I am Helen and this is the Swiggly Careers podcast, a weekly show where we dive into the ins, outs, ups and downs of work and share some ideas for actions and tools for you to try out to give you a bit more confidence and control over your development.

0:16.8

And this is a slightly special episode today because instead of Sarah, their normal co-host and

0:22.5

business partner and best friend that I spend my time with, you've got me and Cal Newport,

0:27.5

guru of deep work and productivity, none of which I am.

0:32.4

This is, I expect a really interesting conversation and a slightly nervous Helen because I was

0:37.0

really interested in learning from Cal, but the way that I work, I expect a really interesting conversation and a slightly nervous Helen because I was really

0:37.5

interested in learning from Cal but the way that I work is so counter to a lot of his concepts.

0:44.3

So I was really honest from the outset that that was where I was coming from but also that I had

0:49.4

you know a very open mind and kind of willingness to learn. And I hope that what you will

0:54.0

listen to in this episode

0:55.7

is me learning through the conversation as well as hopefully what you can learn from as well

1:00.0

because cow was really practical and you know what he was really pragmatic he's not saying that

1:05.0

we all need to go into monk mode every day he is trying to share the importance of why we need to

1:10.5

think differently about how we work

1:12.3

and why it's not sustainable for lots of us to keep working in the maybe quite relentless way we do

1:17.7

across so many things for so longer time without space and this deep work that he talks about.

1:23.9

So he kind of gives a good case for why we might want to do something different. And he also

1:28.2

presents practical ways that we can introduce elements of this to our work. Because I think we're

1:35.4

all on a bit of a scale in terms of how easy we find deep work to do. And I'm at the opposite end of it.

1:40.8

I don't find it easy. Sarah's actually very good at it. But I think some of the ideas that we talk through in the episode are applicable for everybody and not that

1:49.5

difficult to experiment with. So I hope you enjoy it. I would love to get some of your feedback on

1:55.7

what you've learnt and what you might try out and what you think of the conversation. So email us
