Summary

Swords, dragons, werewolves, Vikings, betrayal, and revenge are all hallmarks of the thrilling, yet little known, Saga of the Volsungs, the story of an ill-fated medieval Nordic family. One of J.R.R. Tolkien's first Nordic reads, it's a tale of honor, love, loss, and vengeance, as well as the numerous benefits of just letting it go.
Also, I talk about the barbegazi, a helpful little frozen beard with huge feet. Here are the promised pictures! (go to the website for the pictures)

This week on the Myths and Legends podcast, we'll start the story of the

VOLSungs, a legendary Norse family who finds that, somehow, a downward spiral

of revenge leads inexorably towards destruction and violent deaths for

0:14.4

literally everyone involved. Then, in the mythological creature of the week, I'll

talk about a friendly ice gnome from the Alps, who is really just a helpful

set in a violent world with many warring kingdoms in the north, where all of the

0:54.8

following can get you and everyone you love killed. Insults, perceived insults,

hints of insults, legitimately best unit competitor, your father or grandfather

1:06.0

having a problem with someone, or just not wishing to bake bread with a

1:09.9

dangerous animal in it. It's a land of swords, dragons, werewolves and

1:15.0

meat. If you've ever played the game Skyrim, it's basically that, though

1:19.1

somehow more confusing, dangerous and unreasonable. As we get closer to the

1:23.8

story of Sigur and they drag in Fatheneer, a cursed ring will appear, which

1:28.4

actually served as the inspiration for the one ring from Lord the Rings. The

1:34.2

Norse gods are mildly active in these stories, and if you aren't familiar I'll

1:37.4

just introduce them as they appear. It starts up north, where a young man,

1:41.9

Siggy, is said to be the son of Odin. Odin, if you don't know, is the chief god of

1:47.9

the Norse deities, the Asyr, and their realm of Asgard. He's the all-father, and
