I'm Erin Scala and here's our show today. Oh, Morveira, Metaro, Taurra is one of these interesting grapes with multiple identities.

It has three main incarnations throughout the world.

As Morvedra, it's a mainstay of southern France.

As Mataro, the Catalan version of its name.

It thrives usually as a blending component in the G.S.

M. of Australia, and it was also an important grape in mid-20th century California.

As monestrel, it's an extremely popular grape in Spain,

where you'll find it's widely planted.

Mona Strel has monastic etymology, so this was possibly a grape once cultivated for

religious purposes.

Mataro and Morvedra are both names from Spanish cities.

And it's probably a Spanish grape,

where its er seed likely sprouted in Valencia in the 14th century.

Today, as Morvedra, the grape is pretty

well known in southern France where it likely arrived sometime during the 1500s to the 1700s.

It probably came to France from the Spanish town by the same name, which has since been renamed,

and in the last 400 years or so, the grape made itself invaluable to the wines from Bandol, which have been enjoyed by

royal courts in pre-revolution France.

Orvedra, with its late pushing buds and slow ripening fruit can mature ideally in Bandol.

This is because Morveger likes a long hot growing season and a winter that's not too intense.
