Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. This may sound like a silly question, but do you ever wonder why we have physical pain?

0:13.0

I mean after all, physical pain sucks. It hurts. It's painful.

0:19.0

I remember once slamming my thumb into my car door, I closed my door and my thumb and my thumb didn't get out of the way and it

0:27.0

got squished. I was okay but there was a lot of physical pain at first. I had a friend of mine who used to get migraine

0:34.5

headaches and they were really bad and she told me one of the main things that

0:39.7

people want to do when they have a migraine headache is cut off their head. They're that bad.

0:45.2

I mean, of course, they're not going to, but she was just using it as an example of how

0:49.2

painful they were. We've all, I'm sure, gone through life where something physically painful happened and we think, why is this happening? This is terrible. It's awful and it's painful.

1:24.4

So he went to the emergency room and thankfully he got there fairly quickly and it was a heart

1:29.5

attack and they were able to save his life.

1:32.0

But if he hadn't had that pain and gone to the emergency room,

1:35.4

he would be dead right now.

1:37.2

Or how about the people we know, and I know we know people like this,

1:40.8

that had some form of physical pain? And again, they go to the doctor and

1:44.9

discover they have some form of cancer or tumor growing in their bodies. But

1:49.4

thankfully, because they were able to find it early, they were able to get treatment, get better, and they're doing well now.

1:56.0

So the pain is there as a warning sign that something's wrong,

2:00.0

and something needs to change in order for the body to feel better. And once we realize what that is we can make the changes, get ourselves in a better place

2:08.1

and the pain usually goes away.
