Summary

Brandee Danielle Huston loves being Hamilton Broadway's Hair Supervisor, but it wasn't an easy journey getting there. As Brandee tell us in this episode, things are a lot different for people of color, women, LGBTQ+ folks, and those in women-dominated fields. From poor work conditions to pay disparities to unpleasant interactions, there is inequity all over this industry. It's so important making someone feel confident going on stage, and the work is very personal, but that isn't always acknowledged. Since working at Hamilton, though, Brandee finally feels like she's been set up for success. Brandee tells us how she got there, and walks us through how she earned the trust of the cast as a white woman working with BIPOC hair.

Hi, I'm Stage and Stages Lin Manuel Miranda, and you're listening to The Hamilcast.

Butts and cuts and, and boots and... Hello hello hello I'm Jillian and welcome back to the Hamel cast. This is my second episode with Brandy Danielle Houston,

0:25.1

Hamilton Broadway's Hair Supervisor.

0:27.0

Last week, Brandy talked about growing up

0:28.6

in a fifth generation carnival business.

0:30.5

She'd work the games, help with the rides,

0:32.4

and eventually started painting faces for a few bucks on the side.

0:35.0

But everything changed when she learned there was a job fixing the Santa Beards for the famous Rocquet show.

0:39.0

She saw that and thought, why am I not doing this?

0:42.0

So Brandy jumped in and she did everything from pushing

0:44.4

boxes backstage, electrical work, she worked in sound, she handled props, she drove a forklift, you

0:49.6

name it, and she did it all while going to cosmetology school. So as Brandy says, there's not a guidebook for breaking into the industry and working with the unions,

0:56.0

but I'd say her first episode is a good place to start.

0:58.0

And here's the thing, just because the job looks glamorous doesn't mean it is.

1:02.0

In fact, last week's episode ended with Brandy

1:03.7

telling me how hair and makeup people aren't always as valued as they should be and

1:06.8

that's exactly where we pick up in this episode with Brandy's own personal

1:10.5

experience. Here we go. The unfortunate part about it and like we can get into this like at a later time but is that you know this industry doesn't really set hair and makeup or wardrobe people up for success.

1:40.0

Let's get into it now. It's, you know, I can truthfully say that Hamilton is the only

1:47.4

show that I have been a part of that has set me up for success. Yeah, it's been a very like challenging journey within

1:59.8

touring because I haven't really started with something from the beginning a lot.

2:06.0

I did Janus Joplin, I started from the beginning, but then after that I went into On Your
