Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr Robert Puff. Do you know whose opinion matters most? Yours does, But do you know why? Perhaps not. So in today's talk I want to explore why your

0:20.0

opinion is so important, particularly in regards to your happiness or unhappiness.

0:26.9

Why is our opinion so important particularly about ourselves?

0:32.1

If I'm raised by a loving family and I have good friends that treat me

0:36.2

well, shouldn't I be happy because their opinion of me is positive they're showing me love and kindness. And the opposite is also true. If I have a family that really is cruel to me and treated me unkindly, and now the people in my life do the same I'm repeating that story

0:56.5

doesn't that mean I necessarily have to be miserable but we all know examples of people who seemingly have everyone that loves them and yet their

1:09.1

lives are miserable and they seem

1:14.0

it may even commit suicide and other people who it seems like the world hates them

1:16.6

and yet they seem okay at the same time.

1:19.2

I'll go through very difficult challenging events where lots of people lash out of them and yet they seem

1:26.4

okay. Why is that? I want to share a story, a true story that illustrates this point. There's a famous monk, a Zen Buddhist

1:36.4

monk from Japan called Hakween. He lived during the 18th century and even during his time was really looked on as a wise enlightened

1:46.3

human being but there's also a story that happened to him for a while during his life

1:51.0

where that changed he was head of a monastery near a village and one

1:57.1

day a village girl got pregnant and when the parents pressed her who's the father who's the

2:02.4

father she finally confessed that it was

2:04.9

hakoween the famous abbot who was revered throughout the region well the parents

2:09.9

went up to hakoween with other villagers and they were enraged and they challenged him.

2:16.4

And they said, how dare you did this to our daughter?

2:19.7

And he just answered, is that so? Well when the child was born they brought that child to

2:25.6

hakoween and he had to hire a nurse to take care of that child and many of

2:30.1

his disciples who were following him stopped following Hoccoine. Well time went on and the village
