Summary
What messages have you been told about your body and your sexuality?
At the coffee shop with Juli are two friends; join these women from different cultures for a candid conversation about what they were told and believed about their sexuality. Their stories are unique, but they share a common thread: the messages were powerful and confusing. Listen in to hear how God brings redemption to their lives to walk free from body shame.
"A White theological understanding of sexuality cannot be the only voice. You have to leave room for our voice, for our experiences... If you leave room for our voice too, we find a more robust, a more consistent biblical understanding of sexuality". –Dawn Jones

| 0:12.4 | Well, today I'm joined by two of my good friends, Don Jones and Denise Sweraz. And we together were recently at our annual sexual discipleship leadership summit, |

| 0:27.3 | professional women who are trained therapists, and to talk specifically about some of the |
| 0:32.2 | cultural similarities and differences of how sexuality has been presented and taught in white, black, and Latino |
| 0:39.2 | cultures, particularly within religious settings. |
| 0:42.2 | I learned a lot just by asking some questions of these two women. |
| 0:46.3 | For example, I didn't realize that in the black community, they didn't really go through |
| 0:50.7 | the purity movement the same way our mainstream culture has. |
| 0:54.1 | Or Denisea shares about how cosmetic surgery is a huge social pressure in many Latino cultures. |
| 1:00.9 | And so we're going to talk about the pressure to be beautiful, bearing the blame when you're |
| 1:05.0 | sexually violated, and how confusing it is to get a lot of different messages about appearances |
| 1:10.2 | and body, both from within the church and within the cultural context. |
| 1:14.7 | You know, I think a large part of working towards unity in the body of Christ is to talk about what we have in common in Christ, but also to learn from each other in sensitivity for our differences. |
| 1:25.0 | Now, I know I just mentioned that Don and Denise are both professional therapist. |
| 1:29.3 | Don lives in the St. Louis area. |
| 1:31.2 | Denisea lives in Colorado Springs. |
| 1:33.4 | And you can connect with them in their practices if you like to. |
| 1:36.9 | We'll have links to their particular practices in our show notes, as well as my book, |
| 1:41.8 | Rethinking Sexuality, and a blog called Being Sexy has nothing |
| 1:45.9 | to do with your body. |
| 1:47.7 | But before we head to the coffee shop, have you subscribed to Jabba with Julie yet? |
