Summary

We've gazed into the abyss many times before but the Ray Romano/Gene Hackman comedy WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT (2004) - in which a former U.S. president runs for mayor against a small-town handyman - comes close to breaking us. PLUS: We recap the U.S. midterms, and ask: Is Ron DeSantis a serious threat to Donald Trump? (Short answer: no) Join us on Patreon for an extra episode every week -

Welcome to Michael and us. I'm Will Sloan here as always with.

Luke Savage, welcome back, everyone. Feels like, uh, feels like a while since we've done this.

That's true. You have been in the Algonquin wilderness. I mean, I know that you pretty much

0:27.3

annually like to take a big ambitious canoe trip in Algonquin Park in Ontario. You did it much

0:33.7

later than normal this year. And I think sub-zero temperatures. What was that experience

0:38.7

like?

0:39.7

Well, yeah, I mean, it is, you know, it's becoming an annual thing. This is only the second

0:42.9

time I've done it, but I am kind of planning to do it each year, at least once.

0:48.0

I did go to Kalarney Provincial Park actually rather than Algonquin this time because that

0:53.1

was the only place where there was an outfitters that would rent a canoe. None of the Algonquin this time because that was the only place where there was an

0:55.0

outfitters that would rent a canoe. None of the Algonquin ones seemed to be open. But I'd never

1:00.4

been to Killarney before, but two and a half hours, something like that, west, southwest and North

1:05.3

Bay. So if people know Ontario at all, southwest of Sudbury. It's very different. You know, the landscape,

1:12.3

there's lots of cliffs, more hiking trails than at least the part of Algonquin Park I'm familiar

1:17.3

with. It is true. It's absolutely insane to go in to a provincial park on a canoe trip at this time

1:23.7

of year, which is probably why throughout the course of this entire trip, we did not

1:29.2

see a single other canoe or tent anywhere in the park. We had, it seemed, like, the entirety

1:34.6

of Killarney Provincial Park, which is a vast space all to ourselves. We did see like three people

1:40.7

on one of the hiking trails where we decided on the first full day there to leave our campsite and do some hiking up to a vantage point called the crack where there was a beautiful view and you can walk on that trail.

1:53.0

You can walk there from the beginning of the park from the entrance to the park. So we saw like three people there.

1:59.0

Besides that, not a single other soul for days.

2:01.4

It was 15 degrees on the day we went in, which was very lucky.
