Summary

Joshua Zeitz, author of Lincoln's God: How Faith Transformed a President and a Nation, joins The Realignment as part of the show's expanded American history coverage. Joshua and Marshall discuss President Abraham Lincoln's religious beliefs in the context of the lead up to the Civil War and the Second Great Awakening, how the conversation around a president's religious beliefs has shifted since the heights of President George W. Bush's Evangelical faith in the 2000s, and Joshua's broader work on the presidency of LBJ.

Hey everyone, before we dive into this episode, I want to reiterate how Friday episodes work

0:13.6

at the Realignment. We put out two different types of Friday episodes.

0:18.7

One, supercast subscribers get full access to Sogret and my Ask Me Anything,

0:23.0

Discussion Episodes. You can submit your own questions and comments on the show's supercast page.

0:29.5

If you'd like to subscribe, go to realignment.supercast.com.

0:33.3

You can also find a teaser of the previous AMA episode on last Friday's slot on your podcast player.

0:41.1

Two, the other type of episode I'm putting out, which is demonstrated by the episode today,

0:46.3

is focused on history. These are available to everyone regardless whether you're not

0:51.2

you or a supercast subscriber. I got a comment on the Supercast Q&A page where folks asked for

0:57.0

more history-related content. And frankly, as the show has moved more and more books,

1:01.6

we've gotten more and more input from publishers with really interesting books of history that,

1:07.0

while they don't quite fit the Realignment's day-to-day American politics theme,

1:11.7

they're just interesting. So today's episode fits that dynamic. I'm speaking with author,

1:17.7

Slash Astoria and Joshua Zites, but as new book, Lincoln's God, Half-Earth transformed

1:22.5

a president and a nation. We also discussed his previous book, Building the Great Society,

1:27.1

Inside London, Johnson's White House. I was interested in this book on a couple levels. One,

1:32.5

any discussion of faith in politics is fascinating to me as a millennial who came of AIDS during

1:37.2

the George W. Bush era in the 2000s, where faith and religion were at the center of electoral politics

1:44.3

and big issues like the stem cell research debate, questions of where candidates and presidents

1:50.8

went to church, what their faith looked like were just so key, and it really feels like that is

1:55.2

just no longer a part of our political dynamic. I can say that no one's shocked that President
