Martin Luther was prone to doubts.

His great reformer of the 16th century had faith that at times could rival that of angels,

but at times had doubts that could rival that of an

atheist. One particular time, he grew so despondent and entered such a time of despair that his friends

were concerned how he might act or what he might say. They urged him to take a brief rest, a sabbatical, and so he did,

but he came back as sour and as gloomy as he was when he left. There was even concerned that he

might abandon the movement of the Reformation, and he might have had it not be for the intervention of his wife, Catherine.

One day Martin Luther came home to find his wife dressed in black and weeping.

To her side was a cloak, the kind of black cloak that was worn by women at funerals.

Martin Luther immediately assumed the worst.

What's the matter? He said. Is our child dead? And she said, oh no, the family is fine.

But something far worse has happened. Luther, according to the story, said, what has befallen us? Tell me quick.

I am sad enough as it is. Tell me quick. Good man, she replied, have you not heard? Is it possible that the terrible news has not reached you? And he shook his weary head and he urged her. He pressed for an
