Summary

Philip Barlow is editor of the book"A Thoughtful Faith," which was pivotal in my faith transition as a BYU student and beyond. He currently sits in the Arrington Chair of Mormon History and Culture, at Utah State University. He earned a B. A. from Weber State College and an M.T.S. and Ph.D. (1988, with an emphasis on Religion and American Culture and on the History of Christianity) from Harvard University. In addition to articles, essays, and reviews, Dr. Barlow has published Mormons and the Bible: The Place of the Latter-day Saints in American Religion (Oxford Univ. Press, 1991). He is past president of the Mormon History Association.

Today we have a special guest for me, a very special guest, and also we're sort of announcing a new project podcast in conjunction.

And so there's a lot to do today.

My guest today is Dr. Philip Barlow.

If I had a short list of maybe, if I had started Mormon Stories with a short list of maybe five or ten people that I really wanted to interview,

Dr. Barlow definitely or Phil definitely would have been on that short list.

In fact, the first URL that I ever grabbed, the first domain that I ever grabbed was a thoughtful faith.

Before I ever grabbed Mormon Stories because that's how I thought about framing the podcast.

And it was based on this book that we're going to talk about in just a second call, a thoughtful faith.

But Dr. Barlow, you know, he's not an attention seeker.

He's not a grandstander.

My guess is that unless you're into Mormon studies, many of you will not have heard of Phil Barlow.

Yet in my estimation, at least in the areas that I'm most interested in,

I consider him to be one of the most important Latter-day Saints in the 20th slash 21st century.

Again, as it relates to sort of what I see as the future of what I'll call thoughtful and faithful Mormonism.
