Summary
Is “forgive and forget” actually biblical — or a modern therapeutic idea Christians have absorbed without realizing it? In this episode, I sit down with Teasi Cannon to challenge one of the most widely accepted assumptions in church culture: that forgiveness is primarily about personal emotional freedom.
We unpack the biblical pattern of forgiveness as something tied to repentance, truth, and real relational restoration — not merely an internal process of releasing bad feelings. The conversation tackles hard questions many believers wrestle with: What about unrepentant offenders? Does healing require forgiveness? How should Christians think about reconciliation after abuse or spiritual harm?
This episode exposes how a feelings-centered model of forgiveness became dominant and why redefining forgiveness matters for the gospel itself. If you’ve ever felt confused, pressured, or spiritually burdened by popular teachings on forgiveness, this discussion offers a framework designed to bring clarity and biblical precision.

| 0:00.0 | There were millions of copies of his books sold. |
| 0:02.3 | Wow. |
| 0:02.6 | Millions. |
| 0:03.8 | And because of his degree, and he's a seminary professor, you know, people were absorbing it and taking, you know, then you combine biblical illiteracy. |
| 0:14.1 | You combine all these factors within the church itself with, it's just like the perfect storm for bringing in this absolutely not only |
| 0:25.2 | different definition of forgiveness, but absolutely opposite. |
| 0:34.1 | Hey everyone, today's show is all about biblical forgiveness. So I want to give a little bit of |
| 0:45.2 | context to the conversation that you're about to hear. I have been thinking about this a lot lately |
| 0:50.8 | and have been having a lot of discussions with my friend T.C. Cannon, who's actually |
| 0:54.9 | been thinking about it a lot more deeply than I have to the point that she's writing a book about it. |
| 0:59.9 | And what I did not understand until more recently is that my understanding of forgiveness was |
| 1:05.5 | largely seen through what is called the therapeutic lens. Now, the therapeutic lens of forgiveness really has more to do |
| 1:13.2 | with an emotional release and personal inner healing as it would relate to forgiveness than it does |
| 1:18.9 | a relational restoration that's tied to repentance. And I didn't even know that I was understanding |
| 1:25.9 | it wrong. So all of the Bible verses where |
| 1:28.3 | we're commanded to forgive one another, I was understanding through this therapeutic lens |
| 1:32.9 | that really came into the church in the early 1900s and then gained a lot of steam around the 50s |
| 1:39.2 | and 60s. Now, for some of you, you're going to listen today's show, and this is going to be old hat for you. |
| 1:45.4 | This is how you've always understood biblical forgiveness to be. |
| 1:48.4 | But for, I suspect, a lot of you, this is going to be the first time you've heard some of this. |
| 1:54.0 | So I want to ask you for some grace, stick with us, because I just want to say from the outset that we do want the Lord to heal us |
| 2:03.4 | and we don't want to hold grudges or hang on to bitterness against people who have hurt us. |
