We're going to talk about something that I've found interesting lately in my reading.

And sometimes I think it's going to be a trend on the show

where we've talked about the organon.

We've talked about all sorts of things that come from the ancient world.

These ideas from the Stoics and from others.

History of words, like the history of gender was one.

You know, the Stoic warrior tradition was one that I enjoyed.

Why people, Amathia, why people, while smart people believe dumb shit, frankly, to put it coarsely.

And today we're going to talk about another one from the ancient world, from Greece, actually.

And it's euda monia now there is a particular kind of misery that does not at first glance appear to be misery it doesn't excuse me it doesn't arrive wearing chains it doesn't kick in your front door It doesn't arrive wearing chains.

It doesn't kick in your front door.

It doesn't announce itself with some sort of catastrophe.

It arrives softly and politely.

It arrives with convenience, with entertainment, with comfort, and with the little glowing rectangle on the nightstand that

gets touched before the floor gets touched, before prayers said, before a thought is finished,

before your feet touch grass, before a man even remembers his own name. The alarm goes off,

a hand reaches out, the mind is now invaded before it's even fully awake.

News. Notification. Some asshole's opinion about something.

Some political outrage or another.

Some tragedy three states away that the algorithm has decided to inject directly into the bloodstream.
