Good morning, good afternoon and welcome to Ben-Cuba Radio episode 360.

0:06.4

So Ben is still away having a great time on his honeymoon, so the Monday show has fallen

0:10.8

to me, the usual co-host Tom, I hope you're not too disappointed, and this week I wanted

0:16.2

to answer a question that comes through on the awesome supplements page quite a lot, which is to do

0:21.0

with how to actually choose a protein powder and how protein

0:25.5

powders differ from each other and essentially what is it that makes something

0:29.6

a good quality protein and that is a question that obviously goes a little bit further than

0:34.6

supplementation alone. So the first thing that we need to do to discuss this topic is to understand

0:40.4

what exactly protein quality means and there are three things

0:44.4

that usually play into whether or not something is a high quality protein. These

0:48.6

three things are digestibility, the essential amino acid content and the specifically the loosing content and

0:55.0

I'll take each one in turn just so everyone's kind of on the same page.

0:58.1

So the digestibility of a protein is quite simply the proportion of the food derived amino acids that become available

1:05.2

in the bloodstream after consuming of food.

1:08.0

Meaning let's say you eat 20 grams of protein, of course that's 20 grams of protein, of amino acids, those 20 grams of amino acids may not all appear

1:18.5

in your blood as amino acids. Now why that happens is for a few different reasons but essentially what it amounts to is that when you consume a protein

1:27.0

The amino acids are broken down in your digestive system they then get transported via what's known as the portal vein from the small

1:35.8

intestine and then they'll reach the liver. At that point the liver is able to take up

1:40.1

any amino acids that it wants and it will convert some of those to glucose

1:44.2

before the remainder gets spread out into the bloodstream for use as protein

1:48.7

should and the actual protein source that you choose can influence the proportion of those amino acids which appear in the blood and the proportion of them that are used by the liver either for the liver's own use or for making something else such as carbohydrate.

2:04.0

And the protein sauce that you choose is actually very important in this.
