Summary

Today's episode was inspired by this bit of Dr. Elaine Aron's writing: “All HSPs are creative, by definition. Many have squashed their creativity because of their low self-esteem; many more had it squashed for them, before they could ever know about it.” This quote really spoke to me. Maybe this episode will serve as a reminder to introduce a little more creativity in your life (if you need it).

Welcome to episode 36. I'm your host, Kelly. This is a show about people with sensory processing sensitivity. We are conscientious and perceptive to the details of the world around us. Thanks for tuning in. Today's episode is about creativity. You know, a few years ago, I never would have used the word creative to describe myself.

Creative people were painters, sculptors, poets, artists. That wasn't me. I don't have much

0:47.4

artistic ability. And I grew up thinking that being creative or artistic was sort of a waste of

0:52.6

time. Creativity wasn't practical or of real

0:56.0

value. Creative people were dreamers. I wanted to be a person who got things done. Of course, I eventually

1:03.4

realized that this was a totally, completely dumb way to think. And those beliefs about creativity

1:09.1

not being encouraged were a product of my particular environment,

1:12.7

not related to being highly sensitive.

1:14.7

It's just how I grew up.

The other day I read something that hit me in one of Dr. Elaine Aaron's website newsletters.

She wrote,

1:23.5

All HSPs are creative by definition.

1:27.6

Many have squashed their creativity because of their low self-esteem.

1:32.2

Many more had it squashed for them before they could ever know about it.

1:36.9

Reading this was another one of those wow moments for me.

Then she writes,

1:42.3

The simplest definition of creativity is the putting together of two or more things

1:46.7

that no one but you would think to put together. Does that speak to you? It speaks to me big time.

1:54.7

In my adult working life, I recognize that I enjoy and excel at putting together people or ideas. I like trying to find

creative solutions to problems. I love connecting two people that can mutually benefit each other.
