I am your co-host, Sean, joined today by Eleanor Finley, author of the book Practicing Social Ecology.

Eleanor is a researcher, writer, and activist who previously contributed to our three-part social ecology series on Seriously Wrong. We have

been interested in the subject of social ecology for some time now on the show, sort of started

playing with the ideas in maybe 2015 or 2016. And by 2018,

2019, I became pretty convinced that there's some specific value within the social ecological

tradition, the social ecological tradition of a explicitly utopian politics that is critical

of class society and hierarchy that aims to create a

democratic and ecological society where people's basic needs are met, where hierarchy and bosshood

is eroded, and where property relations are renewed in the direction of usufructian sharing

based on use and need rather than hoarding and private

property and so on.

And also there's layers to what I really like about social ecology and also this idea of a

class-oriented political movement, a revolutionary movement, an anti-capitalist revolutionary

movement that aims to bring

human society and the natural world into, for lack of a better word, harmony, living within

the natural world in a way that respects it, and that also values, you know, human agency,

freedom, and with that values technology and values.

There's all these interesting things about social ecology to me.
