Summary

“It’s definitely not like Suits. It’s way more like The Office.”

For Victoria Asikis, grocery shopping is the best. As a lawyer working in regulatory compliance for food and beverage products, strolling the aisles is basically doing market research. And on this episode, we learn what, exactly, a food lawyer does. (It's pretty fascinating stuff!) Victoria lives in Ottawa, Ontario, where she is a part of the advertising and product regulatory group at Gowling WLG, a large multinational law firm. She spends her days making sure that every word, statement, or claim on a food, beverage, or natural beauty product (like your favorite cereal box, bag of granola, or chemical-free face wash) is true and accurate. She is also the Communications Director for the Hellenic Canadian Lawyers' Association. And turns out, it's really cool work! Victoria is so passionate about what she does — and you'll be able to tell within the first two minutes of this conversation!

Welcome to the Alley On The Run Show. I'm your host Alley Feller and this is season 4 of The On The

0:24.0

Job Series. Every week on the job I'll introduce you to women who have cool, unique, exciting jobs.

0:31.1

We'll learn about how they got into their fields, what their days are really like, and what makes

0:35.6

their jobs exciting, challenging, and at times scary and stressful. My goal with this series is to

0:42.6

learn more about how women make work and running work in tandem, especially when the work part of

0:48.2

that equation includes say a high pressure mission involving landing a rover on Mars.

0:53.0

Like we heard about with NASA Aerospace Engineer Lynn McGrew or working the front lines during

0:58.3

a pandemic, like night shift emergency room nurse Liz Lemon. Today we're taking a hard pivot

1:04.0

into work that's still very, very important though a little less life and death. I'll tell you

1:09.4

a little story about how this conversation came to be. So I posted in the Alley On The Run

1:14.8

Show Facebook group a few weeks ago saying on the job is coming back to the podcast for a fourth

1:19.5

season. Yay! And as I always do I gave everyone the opportunity to pitch themselves or to

1:25.2

pitch someone that they know. Victoria Asikis responded in the comments saying she's a food lawyer.

1:31.6

And the response blew up. So many people responded liking her post asking questions about what she does

1:37.9

just fully fascinated. I loved to see it. So I couldn't not ask Victoria to come on the show.

1:44.1

The demand was there. But truthfully I didn't really know or understand what a food lawyer did

1:49.9

until this conversation. And now, oh, not only do I get it, I'm obsessed with it. This conversation

1:57.3

with Victoria was so much fun. I love her energy and her passion for what she does. And she managed

2:03.5

to sprinkle in a whole bunch of pep talks into this one and you know I love a pep talk. So
