This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague, Conrad Black, in Toronto, a distinguished biographer and National Post columnist,

observing Mark Carney, the new prime minister, and his talents to solve the dilemma right now about

the breaking off of conversation between the U.S. and Canada over tariffs.

And then the sudden announcement of an additional 10% from the Trump

administration. Mr. Black is confident that Mark Carney is the man to mediate and to resolve

this conflict. He is in praise of the Prime Minister, who is not especially on major issues in sympathy with Mr.

Black's, Conrad Black Lord Black's position. But then again, we're speaking specifically of the

talents of a very distinguished senior banker who is now the Prime Minister of Canada.

I have my differences with him in climate matters, and I had my differences with him as governor of the Bank of England

because I thought he was much too outspoken on the Brexit issue.

I didn't agree with his view, but in any case,

I thought that the governor of the central bank should be a nonpartisan figure. But with that said,

he is undoubtedly highly well-informed in all these issues, has a rather diplomatic personality
