It is still striking that they report themselves as saying,

we are 12 brothers. The one is no more. Jacob would have expected

them to say, we were 12 brothers. They knew, of course, that Joseph had not been torn by wild

beasts as they led their father to believe, and they didn't actually know

if he were alive or not. But Jacob is too distraught as this tale goes on to have noticed

the odd way they have of describing themselves.
