This week we are talking all about hyrids vs heirloom seeds in your garden and why you may pick one over the other with Jill Ragan of Whispering Willow Farm. Jill is the author of the book 'The Tiny But Mighty Farm' and a market gardener that has been growing food to sell for several years now. Wood Prairie Family Farms
A small family farm on the edge of Maine’s North Woods is located just six miles from the Canadian border.
For over 45 years they have dedicated themselves to time-honored organic regenerative farming practices and building up the fertile soil of Wood Prairie Family Farm.
Certified Organic by MOFGA (USDA-Accredited) since 1982. Their organic crops are sold to customers like you through their website and their FREE mail order catalog.

Organic REV
The first thing to understand about REV is that it is not an ordinary humic acid product that is chemically-extracted from leonardite, lignite, or other coals.
Rather, it is a 100% naturally-occurring carbon, humic acid & fulvic acid source - along with exceptionally high levels of naturally-occurring microbial biomass
that can increase nitrogen efficiency by up to 25%.  REV replaces depleted soil carbon & bacterial biomass - and absorbs nutrients to make them more readily
available to plants via their root systems.

Hey, you guys and welcome back to the podcast. I've got a conversation for you today that I hope you're going to love as much as I did. We are discussing a topic. I don't know that we've ever really gone in depth on in the podcast before. And that is we're going to be talking about growing hybrids. I know in the gardening world and in the homesteading world, heirlooms are the sweethearts.

0:21.1

And I totally understand why growing heirloom varieties that you could save seed from, that

0:26.0

have a rich history, that in many cases have flavor that's out of this world and are unique.

0:32.0

They're different from what you would buy on the grocery store shelves.

0:35.9

Airlooms are something we hear a lot about and hybrids kind of get

0:39.7

pushed aside. But I have learned over the past couple of years that I'm giving hybrids a little

0:45.8

bit more of a look. And one person that has done the same, but at a much bigger scale,

0:52.0

has been Jill Reagan. You may know her from Whispering Willow Farms

0:56.0

on YouTube, and then she's also the author of the tiny but mighty farm. She has gone to growing

1:01.6

mostly hybrids on her farm, and she's going to explain why, not that she doesn't love her heirlooms,

1:07.4

but she's going to talk about where hybrids can fill a gap in our gardens.

1:12.2

Now, we are going to be talking about what hybrids are.

1:15.2

She's going to specifically talk about how hybrids are not the same as genetically modified

1:19.8

organisms.

1:20.8

So we'll definitely go into that if you're new and aren't quite sure what we mean by hybrids,

1:25.2

but she's going to talk about some of the benefits of

1:27.8

them and how you can decide whether to choose a hybrid or an heirloom when you're deciding what

1:33.3

seeds you want to grow in your garden. The reason why I'm bringing this conversation to you right now

1:38.5

as we head into fall is because you're probably looking back on your summer garden of what worked and what

1:44.9

didn't. And I know sometimes I'm looking back and I'm seeing, man, I had a whole lot of disease

1:49.4

or I had a whole lot of pest issues or goodness, these varieties just didn't perform very well.

1:54.7

So right now, as you're reflecting on what went well and what didn't go well in your garden,

...
