Last week I interviewed Elizabeth Fuller Thames, the author of the book Frugal Woods,

where she goes through their story of Becoming Homesteaders full-time on a 66-acre homestead in the woods of Vermont.

I forgot to bring the book with me to work today because it's been on my nightstand, which is a bit of a pedestal for books, because if you make it to my nightstand, you've made it in my eyes.

So it's on the nightstand, and I finished it already but I kept going back to it and

reading little passages to Julie and one of the passages and I probably should just record this later or drive back home and get the

book but I'm not going to remember a while ago we talked about Con Marie and the magic of

tidying up with that that book has gone just gangbusters crazy.

People are Tidying themselves up everywhere.

Julie and I included a couple years ago, I'd say two,

luckily before we unexpectedly moved, we tied it up like crazy got rid of

loads of stuff and Marie Marie is it her name Marie Condo?

She, the author of The Magic of Tidying Up.

She uses a test where you, and you guys might remember me talking about this on the

podcast, where you grab the book the thing whatever it is and you ask

yourself does this item bring me joy and if you can answer in the affirmative you

keep that item and if you cannot then you get rid of that item which is a pretty high bar for an item to clear in order for you to keep it on your shelf or in your cupboard or wherever it may be.

Well, Miss Frugalwoods, she does not mention Miss Condo, but she said something in the book that just jumped right out of me as a little bit of a challenge to that test and it was essentially this items

material things are meant to serve a specific purpose and that purpose is not to bring you joy.

They do not bring you joy, she goes so far to say.
