Summary
On today's episode of The Exodus Podcast, we are back in the studio with Rendell Erik. Rendell is an Iowa native who has spent his whole life chasing giant whitetails. We discuss:
- Don't be afraid to hunt random spots that may seem unconventional
- Avoid historical hunting and don't be afraid to try new terrains and abandon previous targets
- Mature bucks prefer security cover and avoid open areas
- They strategically use thermal advantage and wind direction to stay undetected
- Overthinking can hinder progress and prevent you from reaching your goals.
- Target overlooked areas such as CRP fields, ponds, and riverbanks where mature bucks can guard does
- Don't be afraid to abandon target deer and adapt your hunting tactics
- Utilize travel routes with cover and set up in areas that provide security for the buck
- The low spots in fields or CRP attract bucks due to the concentration of thermals
- Learn from others but don't blindly follow the crowd
- Access is everything, dont be afriad to try unorthodox methods like kayaking or climbing high walls
And so much more!

| 1:27.5 | And when this goes... Kendall, welcome to Exodus podcast. How's it going, man? Pretty good, man. Thanks for having me on. |
| 1:32.9 | It's awesome. Yeah, excited. Excited for this. And when this goes live, it's going to be the magical November 7th day. And we were just talking, you have your own opinion on the rut. |
| 1:38.7 | But before we dive into all that, tell a little bit about yourself for people who don't know you. |
| 1:44.9 | So I'm originally from the South. My dad was a Marine, so I moved around a bunch and moved to Iowa, |
| 1:51.9 | pretty much packed up, didn't know anybody, anything, never been here, just showed up, |
| 1:57.7 | lived in a campground for like seven months, and then I lived in a dilapidated fifth |
| 2:02.4 | wheel camper. This guy I met had for another seven months until I found the apartment. Then I just |
| 2:10.1 | started chasing my dream, a hunting giant bucks here in Iowa, and whittled my way into the hunting |
| 2:17.3 | industry now full time. Yeah. So that's pretty much me in a nutshell. How many years ago did he move to Iowa? This is my 12th or 13th year here. Okay. Yeah. So your just pure love for White Tails is what brought you there. Yeah. I mean, you can't hunt big bucks if you don't live where they're at. |
| 2:34.9 | Were there any other states on your shortlist, or was it just a no-brainer? I'm going to Iowa. |
| 2:39.7 | I was looking at Ohio, maybe Kansas, but I felt like you can go to those states anytime. |
| 2:48.9 | Yeah. Really. I mean, Kansas has that draw, but it's kind of easy to draw there where Iowa is the hardest |
| 2:53.2 | to get into. |
| 2:51.6 | Yep. So I figure that'd be the best move. And it's, I'm a country guy. I'm not a city, dude. So Iowa's pretty remote. So that's why I picked here too. I like it. Yeah. I'd be curious how many people have moved to Iowa only for White Tails. |
| 3:16.6 | And I think that trend only gets bigger, you know, the more some states decline and how Iowa remains steady. |
| 3:25.8 | I try to talk guys into it. So I have some hunting buddies. They've got kids or wives or families. And I'm just like, man, I'd still move. |
