BOOK DESCRIPTION: What would you do if you learned—from a podcast—that your dad (a pastor) was a serial sexual abuser?

For Ryan George, this isn't a hypothetical question. He knew the faces behind the stories he heard. In fact, his mind flashed with memories of the abuse he'd endured from that same pastor as he listened to news that would change his life. In time, as he processed the destruction rampant in the cult of his youth, he found predatory behavior to be more of a feature than a bug of his former religion as both abuse and coverups were baked into its theology.

Rather than spiral into an understandable deconstruction of his faith, Ryan instead leaned into the intimate embrace of a winsome Jesus. His book, Hurt and Healed by the Church details how he untangled Jesus from the harmful tenets of American fundamentalism. Ryan describes the mental shifts and the restorative relationships he experienced on his journey of healing from church trauma and spiritual manipulation. If you are someone looking to heal church hurt—by leaders or institutions—Ryan shows how rebuilding your faith doesn't have to look like abandonment. He offers hope and inspiration through his story of an unorthodox redemption.

If Ryan could find a thriving and contagious faith after experiencing deep church wounds, so can you.

Now, here's your host, Eric Squarsinski. Hey, everybody. Welcome back to the Preacher Boys

0:40.8

podcast. Today's episode is certainly one of the most fascinating and unexpected conversations I've had

0:46.5

in the last four years of doing this show. And it came about from a conversation I actually had back in

0:52.7

2021 with a young woman named Kathy Partridge.

0:56.9

In the episode, and you can still find it on YouTube or on streaming platforms where you'd find

1:01.8

this podcast, we had a conversation about predatory abuse at the hands of a pastor named

1:07.8

Timothy George. And Kathy very bravely details her story, and I encourage you to go

1:13.2

listen to that episode before listening to this one. Now, the reason this episode is connected

1:17.9

is several months ago I received a package in the mail with a book and a card inside. And I receive

1:25.4

a lot of different books from publishers and, you know, authors that are, you know, think their book might be a good fit for the show. And I receive a lot of different books from publishers and, you know,

authors that are, you know, think their book might be a good fit for the show. And I set this

1:31.7

book aside and thought, okay, I'll get to this a little bit later. And then received an email.

1:38.5

And it was the third email I'd gotten from an agent that was pitching this book. And again,

1:42.3

I got a lot of pitches, so I hadn't

really read through this one thoroughly. But one line in particular caught my eye. In the email,

1:49.7

it said that the book was written by a man who had heard that his father was a predator through the

1:56.8

podcast. And that kind of caught me off guard. I opened up the package. I opened up the book.
