Hey, it's Antrice and welcome to another episode of the Savvy Painter Podcast.

Hollis Dunlap joins me today. Hollis is a painter from Eastern Connecticut. He paints modern paintings with a strong influence of old masters from Caravaggia to Verme.

He started painting early and then went on to study at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.

He now teaches figure painting and drawing, landscape, and still life painting at the Lyme Arts Association.

I'd like you to think back to when you finished your academic art training.

Was there something that surprised you about starting your career straight out of school?

Luckily when I graduated from Lyme, they give out a scholarship to a student each year to have a

show and you get a small grant.

So I got that and I had a solo show there after one year.

So that definitely helped me that first year.

It gave me a goal.

You know, that's what happens when you have everything kind of sorted out and all of a sudden there's nothing it can be really scary

Since then I've always tried to have a show set up even if it's two years ahead so it keeps me going.

So that first year it's much different you know when you have to get a model

yourself and you're working in your own studio and you're paying them yourself

and you have to really focus on stuff you know and I think I I learned a lot more that year I became a better painter because of that

probably it's like four years isn't enough you know like as far as if you want to paint realist, it's just not enough.
