You're hearing Unquiet Respect by Patricia Brennan.

Brennan is an improvisatory mallet player who has been hailed as one of the instruments' new leaders.

As a sidewoman, she's worked with artists such as Mary Halverson, Matt Mitchell, and John Hollandbeck.

Her solo debut, MacKeehisti, released by Valley of Search Records, was included on the New York

Times 10 best jazz albums of 2021.

I spoke to Brennan last year by phone during lockdown.

And now my conversation with Patricia Brennan.

What's your first memory when you conjure up, you know, the early parts of your consciousness?

Wow. You know, actually, it doesn't have to be musical, right? But actually actually it's kind of a musical memory. Growing up,

I'm from Veracruz town in Mexico, the southeast coast of Mexico, and my parents had their shop in the downtown area, and I used to always go to the park with my grandmother when I was very little, and there was lots of music there.

And I remember I was thrown to just the different musical groups that were playing in the park,

including Marimba, and I think it's just a visual thing.

It was something that I was just really, I was really curious about. I didn't even know what it was.

So that is one of my very, you know, early memories, just spending time in this park and then

just watching different music happening and including marimba music or people dance to. And so it was

just very, you know, interesting for a kid. So you see that all around you.

So you mentioned that your parents had a shop. What kind of shop did they have?

Yeah, they, it's interesting because they're both computer engineers, but they open a business selling

electrical, like they do electrical installations. Like they sell bulbs from, you know, all the
