In this episode, I talk with a teacher about the system she uses in her class for self-paced

learning.

I think every teacher wants to differentiate instruction.

We all know each of our students is at a different place, but trying to figure out exactly

how to meet each of their needs is pretty dang hard.

If it was easy, everyone would already be doing it and they'd be doing it well.

When I was in the classroom, I did my best, but I never really received any training

in differentiated instruction.

I've actually learned a lot more about it since I left the classroom.

And the impression that I get is that there are still plenty of teachers who just don't

quite know how to do it.

Even if they've heard of strategies, they don't necessarily know how to manage the whole

thing.

So about a month ago, I went to a teach me and I was really excited to see that one of

the sessions was going to be on self-paced learning.

So I went and the teacher Natalie McCutchen showed us what she does in her classroom.

And I was really impressed by how simple the system was.

And there were a few key things that she said in the session that really, really stood

out to me.

One was that not all of her students are doing self-paced learning all of the time.

It's almost like a privilege that they have to earn and they can lose it.
