but what does this expression mean?

We use this expression when we hope that our luck, our good luck, will continue, or when we hope

that bad luck doesn't come to us.

So, for example, I can say, I haven't had a cold in six months.

Knock on wood.

And what that means is during the past six months, I haven't had a cold.

Hachoo!

No cold at all.
